    Ground and surface water has the potential to connect with natural ecosystems (creeks, rivers, wetlands and the ocean) in addition to agricultural systems (dams, irrigation and crops) and humans.

    To decrease the human and environment health risks, any water on a contaminated site needs to be contained and actively treated or removed in a timely manner.

    How we approach contaminated groundwater remediation

    IES offers onsite innovative and commercially astute services to remediate groundwater which has been impacted by contaminants (such as hydrocarbons) preventing migration to other properties and waterways. Thanks to our work in decommissioning petrochemical infrastructure and contaminated soils, it made sense to also deal with, address, assess contaminated groundwater. We are experienced in:

    • Risk assessment – determine the extent of contamination, impacts to human health and the environment in addition to articulating a clean-up plan and chosen methodologies;
    • Containment – prevent the movement of contaminants beyond the treatment areas;
    • Active remediation – treat and remove contaminants at the source.

    Our water decontamination services

    Each client site is unique. We are prepared for discovering the unknown and adept at problem solving when we do. As such, we apply the appropriate remediation technologies to achieve clean-up results that comply with the legislative framework for groundwater. More often, we deploy multiple technologies onsite at the source.

    IES has invested in the following contaminated groundwater remediation technologies. As required, we combine these with other complementary technologies to get the job done.

    • Soil vapour extraction – remove vapours from soil located above the water table using a vacuum.
    • Air sparging – pump air underground to help extract vapours from groundwater and wet soil located beneath the water table.
    • Pump and treat system – pump water into a treatment system to remove contaminants.
    • Vapour liquid separator – separate liquids that have condensed from vapour (or combined with another substance) in readiness for processing or disposal.
    • Carbon dioxide scrubber – absorb, treat and filter exhaust gases.
    • Reverse osmosis – pass water through a semi-permeable membrane. Any elements larger than water molecules are captured while cleaned water continues through the membrane.
